Every gardener needs one, but nobody really knows which one is the right one: we're talking about the lawn mower. Here are the 4 “basic” models and their advantages and disadvantages.

All types of lawnmowers have their advantages and disadvantages

While in the past we only had to choose between an electric and petrol lawnmower, various lawnmower manufacturers now offer far more lawnmower models to choose from for today's modern gardener. That makes it difficult to decide which type of lawnmower to use. In principle, when buying a lawnmower, you should differentiate between these variants:

➤ Electric lawn mower
➤ Petrol lawn mower
➤ Cordless lawn mower
➤ Tractor lawn mower

Of course, these four models all offer their advantages and disadvantages. And this is exactly what we would like to explain to you in more detail below.

4 types of lawnmowers and their advantages and disadvantages presented

Electric lawnmower:

✔ Advantages:

The electric lawn mower is mostly traded at a very reasonable purchase price in specialist shops and in numerous hardware stores. This type of lawnmower is also considered to be environmentally friendly and easy to maneuver due to its consistently light weight.

✖ Disadvantages:

However, it is considered a disadvantage that you always have to carry an electric cable with you when mowing, which of course involves dangers. Especially when the garden has many obstacles such as trees and shrubs, sculptures, etc. And even tall grass can hardly be mowed satisfactorily with an often poorly performing electric lawn mower.

✔ Advantages:

Petrol lawn mowers give every gardener spatial independence (because they are wireless), which is why they are particularly suitable for large lawns. Many of these models also have a high speed, which is why they can be used perfectly even in tall grass - even with blunt knives!

✖ Disadvantages:

However, petrol has to be refilled regularly with the petrol lawn mower to ensure that it is busy. Why you have to make sure that there is always enough supplies available during the season.

Battery lawnmowers:

✔ Advantages:

The battery-powered lawn mower, which is also environmentally friendly, is often referred to as a combination model because it works like an electric lawn mower on the one hand, but can do without a cable on the other. This in turn has the advantage that the lawn mower can be used very easily anywhere.

✖ Disadvantages:

The disadvantage is, however, that the comfortable cordless lawn mowers are relatively expensive to buy and, depending on the battery power (approx. 24 hours average charging time), are often only suitable for smaller lawns. This is an important purchase criterion. See Search lawn mower for lawn area - our buying advice.

✔ Advantages:

Tractor lawn mowers (also called ride-on mowers) are ideally suited for large lawns and parks. However, you should not confuse them with cutter bars that are attached to agricultural tractors. Rather, it is a mobile, extremely comfortable lawn mower model. Incidentally, the tractor lawn mower is operated with diesel or petrol and is considered to be extremely powerful (mowing width up to 1.50 meters on average) and flexible in its handling.

✖ Disadvantages:

Because a tractor lawn mower has a lot to offer, it is of course also quite expensive. When buying such a model, you have to expect at least a four-digit purchase price.

Another disadvantage is that obstacle lawnmowers can only be approached as close as possible with sufficient practice. In some cases you have to e.g. Use a lawn trimmer to mow the immediate area around the obstacle again.
